Dental implants

If you are missing one or more teeth, perhaps your dentist has recommended dental implants to replace the missing teeth. The technology used to create and affix dental implants has greatly evolved over the past decade, and it is enabling people to rediscover the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.

How it works

Implants consist of titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where the natural tooth once was. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the artificial tooth. A replacement tooth is crafted to mimic the look and function of the natural tooth. The artificial tooth is then affixed to the implant. In addition to enhancing appearance, implants are useful for preserving the facial structure; if left untreated, having lost teeth can cause the bone to deteriorate and the jaw to shrink and become misshapen.

The procedure

Usually, placing dental implants is a two- part procedure. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. After this surgery it takes about two to six months for the jawbone and implants to bond. During this time, the patient will be given a temporary denture or appliance to wear. The periodontist will then design the crown, bridgework or denture that will be affixed to the implant. This is a very common and safe procedure, and most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
